Kale just appeared at the door when Jackson met Isabelle, but writing doesn’t just happen like that. I speculate he was born of the love we have of Bernese Mountain Dogs, combined with the actions and personalities of all the dogs we have ever had.
Throughout the writing of this book, Lynn has a big Yukon Special (a very particular breed of dog found only in the Yukon) named Jayne, after one of the crew members in the 2002/03 Firefly TV series,and Vicki has Cauliflower (Cauli for short) a product of a red Siberian Husky and a West Highland Terrier. Those dogs are very much part of our lives, and their actions keep us on or toes, walking, watching and of course, always inspired.
Kale is exuberant, friendly, compassionate, and wise. He protects his own and watches his property with vigilance. Most days we would say he is regal but not all the time. When caught in private moments, you realize he enjoys snowy days, loves his people and mealtimes. He likes his routine but can be just plain goofy.
